Wheat Farmers HIT as China ABANDONS Australian Exports! Australia's wheat export relationship with China has collapsed. From over six million tonnes a year in 2022–23, Chinese purchases fell to just over one million tonnes in 2025 — not because of tariffs or bans, but because China grew record volumes of its own wheat, filled its reserves, and passed a Food Security Law mandating self-sufficiency in staple grains. The fallout is hitting Australian growers hard: carryover stocks are piling up, farmgate prices have dropped toward $275–300 per tonne, and margins are being squeezed by rising fertiliser costs. Australia found alternative buyers across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North Asia — total exports held above 24 million tonnes — but the price pressure and storage burden are real.
