Niger’s capital Ditches colonial names for more patriotic African ones
Niger’s capital Ditches colonial names for more patriotic African ones - What happens when a nation decides to rewrite its history? In a move to reclaim its identity and sever colonial ties, Niger has embarked on a significant decolonization campaign, renaming streets and monuments in its capital, Niamey. This initiative reflects a broader regional trend where African nations are challenging their colonial pasts and asserting their sovereignty. But Niger’s actions are just the beginning of a growing movement across the African continent, as countries reject the lingering influence of their former colonial masters, particularly France. Several monuments, streets, and squares in Niamey, the capital of Niger, have been rebranded to honor the country's own heroes. This transformative renaming initiative, aimed at shedding colonial-era names, was carried out under the guidance of the president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland. During a ceremony on Sunday, Colonel Boubacar Suman Garanke, head of the Niamey administration, proudly revealed that four major avenues and a square had been renamed to reflect Niger's rich history and culture. "In accordance with the instructions of the president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, the Head of State Abdourahamane Tiani, today we've named four avenues and a square," Colonel Boubacar said ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The New African Channel is an African online news and media platform.
