US F-35B Fighter Jet Performs Hovering Performance US F-35B fighter jets performed hovering maneuvers in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Independence Day. Video released by C-Span, a US cable and satellite television network, shows a Marine Corps F-35B fighter jet deploying its landing gear and decelerating, then hovering near the Washington Monument in the National Mall. This was part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of US Independence Day. The F-35B turned to the right, then back to its original position, continuing to hover. It then rotated to the left, retracted its landing gear, and flew away. The F-35B is a version developed for the US Marine Corps, notable for its short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability, allowing it to operate from amphibious assault ships with smaller flight decks than conventional aircraft carriers. Besides the US Marine Corps, several of Washington's allies have also ordered and are deploying the F-35B. The F-35B fighter jet uses a large lift fan mounted directly behind the cockpit, connected to the main engine via a drive shaft. When activated in hover mode, the cover on the back of the F-35B expands to draw in air and generate lift, combined with engine exhaust ports that can rotate downwards at a 95-degree angle to maintain the aircraft's balance. The F-35B's STOVL (Sustained Stability Control) system is based on the design of the Soviet-era Yakolev Yak-141 fighter jet, which Lockheed Martin acquired from Russia for $400 million in 1991. Keeping the F-35B hovering requires the turbofan engines to operate at maximum power, generating exhaust streams at very high temperatures. The exhaust plume from the F-35B fighter jet is so hot it can melt standard airport runway surfaces, as well as deform unreinforced flight decks on naval vessels. Hovering consumes a large amount of fuel, meaning F-35B aircraft can only maintain a hovering state for a few minutes. The cumbersome STOVL system also makes the F-35B less capable of maneuvering and having a longer range than the Air Force F-35A and Navy F-35C variants. F-35B fighter jets also cannot hover when fully loaded with weapons, as the aircraft's weight would then exceed its total vertical thrust. Before a vertical landing, the aircraft typically has to dump fuel or drop unused weapons to reduce its weight. Across the United States, people celebrated Independence Day with parades, concerts, fireworks, and a host of patriotic events. However, severe storms and record-breaking heat disrupted festival activities in several cities, forcing organizers to postpone, adjust, or cancel some programs. In his speech at the celebration, President Trump affirmed that America is more proud than ever during his term.
