Until just over 60 years ago, real leopards lived in the mountains of the Korean Peninsula. Although leopards are now regarded as symbols of Kilimanjaro in Africa, they were once our neighbors, inhabiting Mt. Inwang and Mt. Bugak in Seoul, as well as Mt. Jirisan and throughout the Baekdudaegan mountain range. Surprisingly, it is known that there were far more leopards than tigers inhabiting the Korean Peninsula. Like tigers, leopards were predators that lived quietly in hiding, hunting small animals rather than attacking humans or raiding villages. Nevertheless, why did the leopards of the Korean Peninsula have to disappear along with the tigers? Amidst the Japanese colonial era's policies to eradicate harmful animals, indiscriminate capture and poaching, and the expansion of human territory, the last beast of the Korean Peninsula gradually faded into the background of history. In this video, we explore the hidden stories of the Korean leopards that once lived even in the heart of Seoul, and trace the survival records of the leopards that outlived tigers and remained alive until the very end. We also examine the impact that large-scale capture policies during the Japanese colonial period, followed by development and poaching after the Korean War, had on the beasts of the Korean Peninsula.
