Carrying the Funeral Bier and Following It Carrying the funeral bier and following it (in procession) is obligatory, as this is among the rights owed by a Muslim to his fellow Muslims. There are several hadiths on this; His ﷺ statement: "The right owed by a Muslim to his fellow Muslim" — (in another version: it is obligatory upon a Muslim toward his brother) — "is five things: returning the greeting (of peace), visiting the sick, following funeral processions, accepting invitations, and saying 'Allah have mercy on you' (in response) to one who sneezes."
