코스피 8% 급락…환율 17년 3개월 만에 장중 최고치 / KBS 2026.06.08.

Today, the KOSPI plunged more than 8%, giving up the 7,500 mark. The won-dollar exchange rate surpassed 1,555 won during the session, reaching its highest level since the financial crisis, but closed lower for the first time in four trading days following verbal intervention by foreign exchange authorities. Reporter Choi In-young reports. [Report] The KOSPI closed at 7,484.41. It fell 8.29%, or 676.18 points, in a single day. The KOSPI opened 1.38% lower than the previous trading day, and as the losses widened immediately after opening, circuit breakers and sell-side cars were triggered in succession. However, this failed to reverse the downward trend, and the index fell below the 7,500 level. Foreign investors engaged in net selling for the 21st consecutive trading day, selling 350 billion won worth of shares. Individual investors net bought 1.76 trillion won worth of shares, absorbing the selling pressure. This is attributed to the sharp decline in stock prices in the U.S. market, centered on technology stocks such as semiconductors, and the renewed escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Samsung Electronics fell by over 10%, breaking the 300,000 mark, while SK Hynix dropped by more than 7%, giving up the 2 million mark. Top-performing stocks by market capitalization, including Hyundai Motor and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, also declined across the board. The KOSDAQ also closed at 911.39, down 9.08%. Sell-side cars and circuit breakers were triggered in succession in the KOSDAQ market as well. The won-dollar exchange rate soared to its highest level since the financial crisis. The weekly trading began at 1,555 won and 20 jeon per dollar; this is the highest opening rate in 17 years and 3 months since March 2009, during the global financial crisis. The foreign exchange authorities initiated verbal intervention, stating, "We will never tolerate excessive volatility or one-way bias and will respond strongly."
