[Obuse: Pleasant town famous for chestnuts and Hokusai] Every year during the October Golden Week holidays, the surrounding area is jammed with cars from other prefectures. I visited Obuse early, on a weekday morning. Even though it's still before the peak chestnut season, the area was already packed. Obuse is nationally renowned for its chestnuts. Recently, it's also become known for its deep connection to Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai moved to Obuse in his later years and produced many of his paintings here. The Obuse Hokusai Museum, home to Hokusai's original paintings, woodblock prints, and ukiyo-e prints, is a popular attraction for many foreign visitors. Westerners, in particular, seem to be more interested in Hokusai's prints than we Japanese are. Chestnut sweets are a popular item in Obuse Town. The most popular is Obusedo's Suzaku (chestnut dim sum). It became a huge hit after being featured on TV Tokyo's "Ad-Chakku Tengoku" in 2015. Its popularity shows no signs of waning, with many people visiting just to see Suzaku. *At peak times, people would line up for numbered tickets from as early as 3 AM. Currently, reservations are almost entirely required. Some same-day tickets are available, but they fill up quickly. Obuse's greatest charm is its streets, which have remained unchanged since the Edo period. Traditional wooden merchant and townhouses that exude history remain, and cultural assets such as old houses and temples are scattered throughout the area. The area is home to many earthen storehouses, tiled-roof houses, and cobblestone streets. There are also walkways lined with chestnut trees that look like cobblestones. Obuse is a town where you feel somehow at peace just by walking around.
