I walked through the shopping streets of Hirano Ward in Osaka. Starting from Hirano Nankai Shopping Street (Nankai Mall), the former terminus of the Nankai Electric Railway, I passed through Hirano Honmachi-dori Shopping Street (Sun Alley), Hirano Chuo Hondori Shopping Street, and Hirano Higashi Shopping Street, all retaining strong traces of the Showa era, before finally heading towards Hirano Park. With its old buildings that survived the war, its town layout that has continued for over 400 years, and its history as a moated, self-governing city, Hirano's charm cannot be fully described by the single word "retro."
