So let’s dive headfirst into film terms! We’ll sort out what a frame is, what types of shots there are and how to distinguish a scene from a sequence, and a sequence from an act. Here’s our movie terminology list: 00:52 ➤ FRAME The theory of video editing starts with the smallest block, which is a film frame. It’s a static image. Whenever someone says that a movie is filmed at 24 frames per second, it means that there are 24 still photos in one second. 01:19 ➤ SHOT The word "shot" may stand for a number of things. First off, a shot is a set of frames which have been filmed from the moment the camera was on until the moment it was switched off. Sometimes individual shots can be pretty long. In such cases it's said that the scene is filmed in a single shot, like a 4 minutes scene from the movie "Children of Men". The word "shot" also has another meaning connected with shot size in filmmaking. For example, there are such video production terms as close-ups, mid shots, and long shots. Also, shots can be classified according to the number of people in the frame. 03:13 ➤ SCENE The next biggest block in movie-building is a scene. A scene is a set of shots connected with a unity of place and time. Out of all the movie parts that we’ve considered so far, it is the first part which is narratively complete. For example, here’s a scene taken from "The Lord of the Rings". As you can see, there are many cuts and many shots. But since the action takes place in one location and in the same time frame, we realize that it’s one scene with its own micro-plot. 05:41 ➤ SEQUENCE A few scenes are combined into a video sequence. Surely, scenes shouldn’t be random, but rather connected with a common storyline. To make it clear, let’s consider this sequence with Conni Corleone’s wedding at the beginning of “The Godfather”. The sequence with the wedding lasts nearly 20 minutes. It contains a few micro-plots, but it is perceived as a whole because of its unity of time and place. 06:26 ➤ ACT Movie specialists single out an act as the biggest unit in a movie. One act combines a few sequences. Here, movie theory and film production terms are closely intertwined with literature theory, since the division into acts is characteristic of many literary texts.
