In the new episode of the series IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK, we tackle one of the most deeply rooted historical myths: “Byzantium.” Was it really called “Byzantium”? Did its own inhabitants consider themselves Greeks? Did Constantine the Great actually make Christianity the official religion of the Empire? And in the end—did Constantinople fall because of a… hidden gate? Drawing on historical sources and modern historiography, we follow the transition from the Roman Empire to the Eastern Roman Empire; when and why the term “Byzantine” was introduced later on; how people of the time actually identified themselves; what the Empire’s real relationship was with religion and violence; and for which political reasons Byzantium was ultimately incorporated into the Greek national narrative in the 19th century.
