Aging Out: Inside Look at the American Squid Fishery

Did you know that Massachusetts fishermen catch millions of pounds of local squid every year? Yet despite this the majority of the squid found at the retail level in grocery stores and restaurants are low quality previously frozen squid sourced from places like China. The squid that is harvested here in New England unfortunately is also exported overseas - as much as 80% of Rhode Island's squid is flash frozen and sent to China for processing, where it's thawed, cleaned, cut, and then frozen again before being sent back to the US. As a result there are copious amounts of cheap squid available on the market at any given time, despite the fact that local wild US caught whole squid is readily available. Unfortunately most consumers aren't aware of the difference, since American consumers typically choose convenience and affordability over quality and freshness. However every Spring commercial fishermen all over Massachusetts go out in late April and Early May to harvest local squid that have migrated inshore. And if you know how to find them at local markets, you can experience some of the freshest, tastiest squid available. This summer we're partnering with Eating with the Ecosystem to show you all the incredible kinds of local seafood that is available in the State of Massachusetts. We'll show you exactly how to locate and prepare local fish at home, so you can improve your seafood experience and become a more educated seafood consumer in a wave of imported fish.
