They are large venomous snakes, typically reaching an average length of 3.5–4.5 meters, making them the longest venomous snake in the world. The world record for the longest venomous snake is 5.59 meters. It is a black Thai king cobra found in Village No. 4, Kalase Subdistrict, Sikao District, Trang Province, in 2019. However, king cobras in pristine forests can grow to over 6 meters long. However, there have been no official records of king cobras exceeding 6 meters in length. There are only stories from ancient people who tell of black king cobras as long as palm trees, believed to be the guardian spirit of the forest.
