The First Man to Reach Australia | Documentary For Sleep

Vast coastlines remained uncharted, and much of the continent existed only as speculation beyond the horizon. That changed when the Dutch ship Duyfken, commanded by Willem Janszoon, crossed the Arafura Sea during the voyage of 1605–1606. Janszoon's expedition became the first recorded European voyage to reach the Australian continent. Sailing along the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, the crew charted stretches of unfamiliar shoreline, making observations that would become the beginning of Europe's documented exploration of Australia. The journey was far from easy. Shallow reefs, shifting sandbanks, uncertain maps, tropical weather, and unfamiliar waters challenged the expedition at every stage. Encounters with the land and its Indigenous inhabitants were brief and often difficult, reminding the explorers that they had entered a world already home to cultures with histories stretching back tens of thousands of years. Although Janszoon did not realize he had reached a new continent, his voyage marked a turning point in maritime history. It opened the way for later Dutch expeditions that gradually expanded Europe's knowledge of Australia's coastline over the decades that followed. This gentle documentary for sleep drifts into the remarkable voyage of Willem Janszoon, exploring how the first recorded European reached Australia and how one small Dutch expedition quietly changed the map of the world forever.
