Montereale is a municipality in the province of L'Aquila with 2,197 inhabitants at 948 meters above sea level. Of ancient origins, it developed in the late Middle Ages under the name of Monte Regale and was awarded the title of "CITY" by Conrad IV. Rebuilt after the 1703 earthquake that razed it to the ground, it is the main center of the Alto Aterno area. The area is particularly rich in water: the Aterno, Abruzzo's main river, originates here.
