This water webinar focuses on the development of biobased geotextiles. Traditional geotextiles and drainage pipes are indispensable in road and hydraulic engineering, but are often made from fossil-based plastics. This results in CO₂ and nitrogen emissions and can, in the long term, contribute to microplastic pollution and the leaching of substances into soil and water. Claudia van Riet (Building Balance) and Roald van Gameren (Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier) demonstrate the role geotextiles play in the construction and management of roads, dikes, and waterways, and explain why the sector is looking for more sustainable alternatives. The Innovation Impact Challenge will also be discussed, an initiative by Building Balance and Biobased Circular that focuses on the development of biobased geotextiles.
