South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster officially appointed Darline Graham Nordone on Monday to fill the U.S. Senate vacancy left by the unexpected death of her older brother, longtime Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham, 71, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening following an aortic dissection on Capitol Hill, abruptly halting his campaign for a fifth consecutive legislative term. Nordone, a veteran public administrator who has served as the commissioner for the South Carolina Commission for the Blind since 2019, was recommended by state leadership and swiftly endorsed by President Donald Trump to serve out the remainder of the term through January 3, 2027. Accepting the temporary transition through tears at the State House ceremony, Nordone—whom the late senator legally adopted and raised as a father figure following the childhood loss of their parents—vowed to fiercely defend her brother’s defense priorities and back the administration's platform.
