Obscure Riverside Industrial Switching - Union Pacific LOB40 5/21/2025

Here is a chase of the Riverside, CA based Union Pacific job LOB40, affectionately nicknamed the Cheeseburger Local. Nicknamed due to a decades old incident where the conductor was late to a dispatch call and track authority from the Santa Fe due to him grabbing a hamburger in the Santa Fe times at West Riverside, the name still sticks to this day, where it switches many industries in Riverside on the BNSF San Bernardino Subdivision, and Rohr Industrial Lead, in addition to several more sprinkled about and one in Jurupa Valley, this job is quite busy. Today on the menu is work on the Rohr Industrial Lead, a small spur that once served an airplane parts factory in Riverside that gave the industrial lead its namesake. We follow this train around during its complete duration of switching activities before it performs interchange work at Mira Loma Yard. Starting bright and early I caught the building at Arlington inside the yard. In addition to building their train for the Rohr, they also switched Transloading Express, an industry that gets plastic pellets hoppers within the yard. Sometimes the switching at this industry can be lengthy, and today was one of those days. When they concluded, 5 empty hoppers were taken out of the customer. When the train was fully built and blocked for the Rohr, they pulled out and were ready to shove on the branch. Today's consist consisted of three locomotives, 2 GP60s. Next was 2 tank cars for Industrial Solution Services, a lumber centerbeam for Jones Wholesale Lumber (an extremely rare industry to be switched), the 5 empty hoppers from Transloading Express, and a string of eight cars for Boise Cascade consisting of a centerbeam, five bulkhead flatcars of rebar, and two boxcars. This hefty train made for a great outing on the Rohr! The train shoved to the rear of the branch to serve the first and largest customer, Boise Cascade, by Riverside Airport. The 8 aforementioned cars were dropped off and no empties were pulled out. The train then pulled up to Jones Wholesale Lumber to drop off its centerbeam. This industry is normally serviced by trucks, however a shortage of truck drivers on the I-5 corridor led to a railcar being ordered to this industry. It is unknown if this was the last railcar to be dropped off at this customer since filming or if more have come. Following this rare move, they pulled up to Airgas, one crossing away, to switch and pull out two empty cars of anhydrous ammonia, with no loads being delivered. Finally, the last customer of the day, Industrial Solution Services was switched, where a lengthy session of back and forth switching resulted in two loaded tank cars being delivered, and three empty tank cars being taken away. After this, they headed back to Arlington Yard, where they immediately shoved on the Los Angeles Subdivision to interchange at Mira Loma after waiting for a Metrolink, where I caught them on the 1905 Santa Ana River Viaduct built by the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (LA&SL). I hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching! 0:00 Switching Transloading Express 5:36 Building Train for Rohr 13:06 Private Crossing 16:25 Jurupa Ave 19:50 Central Ave 20:51 Switching Boise Casdade 25:16 Switching Jones Wholesale Lumber 32:54 Switching Airgas 43:52 Jasmine St 46:38 Switching Industrial Solution Services (Fremont St) 53:57 Switching Industrial Solution Services (Republic St) 55:13 Private Crossing 58:04 Arlington Yard 58:33 Metrolink M402 58:53 Santa Ana River Viaduct Train ID: UP LOB40 21 Head End: UP 1075~GP60 UP 1060~GP60
