A 2008 Opel Zafira B with a Z18XER engine and 170,000 km odometer was purchased in February 2019. During operation, we noticed a noisy engine, similar to a diesel engine (so-called "dieseling"). It was most noticeable when starting the engine: it was very clearly audible for the first second after starting and then lasted for about 2-3 seconds. After researching information online, we concluded that a possible cause could be malfunctioning solenoid valves (due to failure, clogging, or other reasons). We decided to remove them, inspect them, and draw conclusions from there. Upon removal, we discovered that one valve was not the original. The reason for replacing it is unknown. The screens are not clogged. The valves operate when current is supplied from the battery. The screens (which, according to car owners, are necessary during engine break-in) were removed, cleaned with a little water, blown out with compressed air, and the valves were swapped. Of course, we hoped they would be clogged and cleaning would solve the problem. After all these steps, the problem didn't go away completely, but there was a positive result: the defrost disappeared immediately after starting. It reappears after about a second, but is less pronounced and lasts no more than 2 seconds. This engine is installed in the Opel Astra H, J; Opel Zafira B, C; Opel Insignia; Opel Vectra C. It is also used under the name F18D4 in other GM vehicles (Chevrolet Cruze, Lacetti, Opel Mokka). So, if you have one of these cars with this engine, start by removing and inspecting the valves.
