Chaitya Bhoomi is a memorial located at Dadar. This is the place where Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was cremated, and where his relics (ashes) are preserved.This memorial serves as a shrine of reverence for him, and countless people especially his followers visit this place to pay their respects. In 1966, on the occasion of Ambedkar’s 75th birth anniversary, the Buddhist Society of India (BSI) laid the foundation stone for the “Chaitya Bhoomi” memorial site. In 1968, a major part of the monument a 42 foot tall stupa was constructed. Chaitya Bhoomi was officially inaugurated on 5 December 1971. At the time of the inauguration, the monument was not fully completed, but it was established as a “memorial for B. R. Ambedkar." During the inauguration, the entrance gate was opened by Ambedkar’s daughter-in-law, Meerabai Yashwant Ambedkar. The Government of Maharashtra has recognized Chaitya Bhoomi as an “A-class pilgrimage and tourist destination.” The construction and design of Chaitya Bhoomi are unique: The monument is a “stupa,” and its main gate is a replica of the famous Sanchi Stupa gateway. The structure is primarily square-shaped, with a small dome on top. It is divided into a ground floor and a mezzanine floor. Inside the circular inner section, there is a wall approximately 1.5 meters high. Within this space is placed a bust of Dr. Ambedkar, along with a statue of Buddha. On the mezzanine level, there is a stupa along with residential space for Bhikkhus (monks). The flooring is done in marble. The main entrance also features a replica of the Ashoka Pillar. Every year on 6th December, the death anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar is observed as Mahaparinirvan Diwas. On this day, lakhs of followers visit Chaitya Bhoomi. On this day, not only common devotees but also high-ranking individuals such as the Chief Minister, Governor, and various political leaders visit to pay tribute. In 2023, it was estimated that more than six and a half lakh people would visit Chaitya Bhoomi on this occasion. Chaitya Bhoomi is situated right on the seashore (Dadar Chowpatty). The soothing view of the sea and the peaceful environment make the experience serene. In 2022, a special “viewing deck” was opened near the memorial. It is 16 feet tall and spans around 1,500 square meters. Its purpose is to provide visitors with an enhanced view of the sea and its surroundings. This place is not just a pilgrimage site people also visit for tourism, yoga, peace, and reflection. The combination of the sea, memorial, and calm atmosphere makes it a pleasant destination.
