Symphonia Domestica (Finale) – Richard Strauss | St. Michael Thorn Wind Orchestra, Ivan Meylemans
Finale from Symphonia Domestica – Richard Strauss, arr. Erik Somers (live) Performed by: St. Michael Thorn Wind Orchestra Conductor: Ivan Meylemans Richard Strauss was a master of musical storytelling, renowned for orchestrations that are colourful, virtuosic, and full of character. With Symphonia Domestica (1904), he turned away from mythological heroes and distant worlds to portray his own family life, a bold move in an era when “serious” music was expected to be lofty and grand. At its heart are Strauss’ wife Pauline, a spirited soprano, and their son Franz, each represented by a musical theme. The oboe d’amore rocks gently like a cradle for baby Franz, while other instruments capture the parents’ dynamic, from tender affection to fiery debate. The Finale, in 2025 arranged for St. Michael Thorn Wind Orchestra by Erik Somers, crowns this domestic tale. The movement begins with nocturnal calm before bursting into a lively fugue. Father, mother, and child themes intertwine in contrapuntal play, as if the whole family speaks at once, distinct voices, yet united in harmony. Strauss closes with a jubilant climax: the child’s themes return in radiant splendour, and the monumental coda embraces family life as something noble and exalted. Recorded on 8 November 2025 at Muziekcentrum Enschede (The Netherlands) during a national concert band competition - Winner with 97.5/100.
