In 2 Peter 2:1–10a, the apostle Peter issues a serious warning to the church: the greatest danger does not always come from without, but from within. There will be false teachers who will sneak in, falsify the truth, exploit people for gain, and, by their lives and teachings, bring shame to the way of Christ. But this text is not just a cry of alarm. It is also a great comfort: the same God who judged rebellion in the past knows today to keep the wicked for the day of judgment and to deliver those who are His from trial.
