HMS Hermes, The World's 1st Purpose Built Aircraft Carrier.
HMS Hermes (95) was the world's first purpose designed and built aircraft carrier built for the British Royal Navy. It was contested that the Imperial Japanese Navy Carrier Hosho was the first as this ship was commissioned into service first but it was in fact HMS Hermes to have been designed and laid down first. Trials were ongoing with aircraft carrier conversion projects such as HMS Eagle and HMS Argus which resulted in the delay to HMS Hermes being commissioned but she was eventually to enter service in 1924. HMS Hermes saw service in the Atlantic Fleet, The Mediterranean Fleet, The Eastern Fleet and spent a great deal of her time serving in The China Station. Placed into reserve in 1938. HMS Hermes was recommissioned at the outbreak of World War Two and took part in anti submarine patrols as well as the blockade of Dakar. She eventually came to a tragic end off the coast of Ceylon, modern day Sri Lanka, when she was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy and aircraft from the carrier Akagi.
