KIRK ELLA: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #88 of 172
EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #88: KIRK ELLA Kirk Ella is a large village on the western outskirts of the city of Hull, approximately five miles away from the city centre. Kirk Ella’s boundaries include the small hamlet of West Ella as well The name is thought to derive from Old English. It mean Aelfa's Woodland Clearing with a Church" – Kirk being the old word for church. The village skirts the foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds to the west Kirk Ella is primarily residential, but has a few shops and some other amenities. It was once a small village, but together with Willerby and Anlaby, Kirk Ella now forms what is effectively a large suburb A village since at least the 11th century, Kirk Ella remained relatively unimportant until the 18th and 19th centuries. That’s when wealthy Hull merchants, wishing to live outside the city arrived Several houses were built during this period, and after the 1920s, the village grew substantially, with large amounts of high quality housing surrounding the traditional village centre The major landowners here in the 19th century were the Sykes family, who originated from Carlisle. Their name can be found all over the village, and it is they who gothicised the hamlet of West Ella Kirk Ella is full of listed buildings, blue plaques and historic landmarks. It might be a lot more residential and suburban compared to a century ago, but its history is still very much visible This is Kirk Ella folks, lets go walking! **** #KirkElla, #Hull, #EastRidingofYorkshire, #Yorkshire, **** Sledmere House: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sledmer...
