Freshly Made Sweet Wheel PanCakes "Imagawayaki" Japan and Taiwan Street Food in Brick Lane, London..
✓ Imagawayaki (今川焼き) is a popular Japanese dessert often sold by street hawkers on the road side and at festivals in Japan; but they can also be found outside of Japan in countries such as Taiwan and China. The batter recipe varies from place to place but will usually contain some (or all) of the following ingredients; such as eggs, sugar, honey, milk, all purpose flour and baking powder The Wheel Cakes seen here are cooked in a special pan (similar to a waffle iron), here it was offered in three different menu options being either filled with a sweet Adzuki (Azuki) Red Bean paste, Chocolate and Custard or just Vanilla Custard. We've read that it is becoming increasingly popular with a wider variety of fillings such as different fruit custards and preserves, curry, different meat and vegetable fillings, potato and even mayonnaise. In Taiwan they are commonly called "red bean (i.e. azuki) cake" (and in China: 紅豆餅 pinyin or hóngdòu bǐng). In the greater Taipei area they are called The Taiwanese "Car Wheel Cake" Many thanks to JC who welcomed us and graciously allowed us a privileged glimpse into his street kitchen to do the videoing.
