SINAIS DE ALERTA NOS 3 PRIMEIROS MESES DO BEBÊ
A baby's development goes through several stages, and it's important to understand this process so you can identify if something out of the ordinary is happening and talk to a professional who can guide you accordingly. In the first trimester of life, babies are still experiencing the period of extragestation. That is, they're in an adjustment phase where they're understanding that they're now outside their mother's body. Although they spend most of their time sleeping, especially in the first month, there are some important signs that demonstrate the importance of having the baby evaluated by a professional (remember that a warning sign is not a diagnosis, since diagnoses are made by professionals, not the baby's family). Another important point is that sometimes, a warning sign alone isn't relevant to the overall assessment of the child. I'm saying this to reassure you, and if you identify any of these signs, don't despair, but talk to your pediatrician. The purpose of having this information and knowledge is precisely to detect any problems early and greatly facilitate resolution. Some of these warning signs are: The baby is extremely floppy and still, like a doll, or has extremely stiff legs and arms, making diaper changes and bathing difficult. The baby shows no improvement in holding its head up. A baby in the first month of life, when placed on its stomach, can lift its head up but cannot keep it up. It lifts, turns to the side, and then lies down. In the second month, this development needs to occur; the baby lifts its head up and can hold it up for longer. In the third month, this head control needs to mature. The baby lifts its head up and can keep it up, even looking to the sides. If this head movement is not present, this is a warning sign. The baby is between two and three months old and does not follow the movement of objects and also does not react in any way to noise. The baby's head is always turned to the same side. You lay your baby on their back, or when changing their clothes, diapers, or bathing, you notice that their head is always tilted, always to the same side. And often, as a result of this positional habit, the baby's head becomes flattened, and it's important to seek professional evaluation. I want to emphasize the importance of monthly checkups at this age with a pediatrician. This is the professional who is closest to your baby, who will assess their weight gain, growth, head circumference, test their reflexes, and evaluate their breastfeeding and nutrition—all of which are extremely important. And of course, we should always trust our instincts, our mother's sixth sense. If you think something is wrong with your child, talk to your baby's pediatrician or seek a professional for an evaluation. I really hope my video helps you, brings you peace of mind, and somehow makes motherhood a little more peaceful. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✅ Baby Grows with Carolina Reinecke, Physical Therapist and mother of two daughters.
