For migrants departing from South America with the dream of reaching the United States, they fear the Darién jungle, but it’s not the most dangerous part of the entire journey. After crossing it, from the shelters of Darién, Panama, they travel by bus directly to the border with Costa Rica and Nicaragua. This is how the governments ensure that no migrant gets off the bus in their territory. But the worst is yet to come: crossing the heart of Central America, passing through Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. It is here, at the penultimate border, where many question whether leaving their homes was worth it. Guatemala and Mexico are countries where crime constantly puts migrants at risk. I have arrived at this border to hear the stories of those facing this danger. Many, with no other option, organize themselves to walk the last stretch of their journey. We continue with the second episode of this series on the migration route to the United States.
