Healthy Japanese Habits You Can Also Do Starting Today

Have you ever wondered how Japanese seniors stay so full of energy and spirit well into their 70s and beyond? The truth is, even in Japan, not everyone ages the same way. Some older adults stay incredibly energetic and healthy, while many others unfortunately do not. In my 25 years of working in healthcare here, I have met more than 1,000 seniors and noticed a clear difference between these two groups. While many simply eat traditional Japanese food, drink green tea, and do light exercise to get by, the ones who stay genuinely young share one special habit in common. They focus constantly on "doing small things they can control every single day." The two most important keywords for healthy aging are "small things" and "control." The Hidden Stress of "Big Goals" You might have heard of the global bestseller IKIGAI, which often talks about finding a grand life purpose, contributing to society, or earning money at any age. While doing those things is wonderful, pushing yourself too hard to achieve massive goals can introduce too many stressful variables that are completely out of your hands. Before you know it, these uncontrollable factors end up creating massive, hidden stress that harms both your body and mind. That is exactly why we need to step back and focus on the small things—the tiny aspects of daily life over which we have absolute, 100% authority. Why Your Mind Needs "Total Control" (The Plant Experiment) There is a famous psychological experiment from the 1970s at a US nursing home that perfectly backs up this approach. Researchers divided elderly residents into two groups. The first group was told that the staff would take care of absolutely everything, including watering a houseplant they were given. The second group was told that their life was in their own hands, and they were given complete responsibility for watering and taking care of their plant. An astonishing 18 months later, the first group—the ones who had their sense of control taken away—had a mortality rate twice as high as the group that took care of their own plants. As human beings, the moment we lose the feeling that we are controlling our own lives, our minds and bodies deteriorate rapidly. On the flip side, even a tiny action like deciding to water a plant gives us a profound sense of purpose and becomes our fuel for living. How to Find Your "Small Ikigai" Today Originally, the Japanese word ikigai didn't mean a grand life mission; it simply refers to "the little joys and motivations that make life worth living day by day." You can start finding these small, controllable ikigais today by choosing just one daily routine and doing it with a tiny bit of extra care and intention. For example, when you drink your morning coffee, put on your favorite music and fully savor the aroma and taste. For that brief window, you are in total control of your universe. Cooking is another beautiful example; when you mindfully chop vegetables to the exact same size, you shut out the world, relax your brain, and find deep fulfillment. Many older men in Japan even lose themselves in the peaceful process of making perfect Soba noodles. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, and it doesn't have to make a single dime. For me, it’s my weekly swim—a private space where I am in 100% control, which works wonders for my mental peace. Summary There is absolutely no need to stress yourself out looking for a monumental goal. No matter what chaos is happening in the world, the time you spend enjoying your special cup of coffee or the beauty of the vegetables you mindfully sliced is something you control 100%. When you pass 70, just staying healthy and aging gracefully is a massive contribution to society because it helps reduce public healthcare costs. Embracing your own small, cozy world is more than enough, and finding something simple that you can pour your love into every day is the ultimate secret shared by healthy older people in Japan.
