He is the only offspring in his herd, which consists of his grandfather, grandmother, and mother. During "the great quake" (an earthquake), his mother dies after confronting a Tyrannosaurus rex (called Sharp Tooth in the film). Littlefoot then sets off in search of the legendary Great Valley, and along the path his mother had indicated before dying, he meets four other young dinosaurs who join him on his quest: the loudmouth (Saurolophus) Ducky, the three-horned (Triceratops) Cera, the spiky-tailed (Stegosaurus) Spike (Spike in the first film and his original name in the rest of the films), and Petrie (pronounced "Petri"), a flying (or pterosaur, although these animals were not actually dinosaurs but a separate group). It is a journey full of surprises and dangers in which the small but brave gang will have to face the most fearsome predators and countless challenges, to discover new life lessons and the importance of teamwork.
