Mark is the Gospel that most frequently addresses eating. The word "eat" appears 28 times and is scattered throughout various important stories: from eating with sinners, to the debate over clean and unclean foods, to the miracle of the loaves, to the Last Supper. This shows that for Mark, eating was not simply a matter of the stomach, but a means of understanding who Jesus was and how the Kingdom of God works. Interestingly, amidst the many stories about eating, Mark repeatedly depicts people who fail to grasp the meaning behind food. The disciples witnessed the multiplication of loaves of bread, but remained clueless. The crowds pursued bread, but did not necessarily understand the Giver of Bread. The question is not simply "What is eaten?", but "How do humans view food?" Is food a gift to be shared or a commodity to be hoarded?
