How to repair damaged ribbon flex cable in mobile phone | flex cable repairing

🛠️ Step 1: Aligning the Broken Flex Cable The first step is to rejoin the two broken pieces of the flex cable. 1. Place both broken pieces on a flat and clean surface. 2. Use double-sided tape to stick them down firmly, so they don’t move while working. 3. Align the copper traces of one piece exactly in front of the other. o The alignment must be perfect because if even one line is misaligned, the cable will not work. 4. Keep a very small gap between the two pieces. o Why? Because flex cables have copper lines on both sides. If the two ends touch directly, the copper of one side may short with the other side, causing failure or short-circuit. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 2: Applying UV Mask Ink for Strength and Insulation After aligning the pieces, the next step is to make them stable and insulated. 1. Take a small amount of UV mask ink (a green or blue liquid used in PCB and flex repairs). 2. Apply it gently in the gap between the two ends. o This ink acts like glue and insulation. o It keeps the two pieces firmly attached. o It also ensures that no copper lines from opposite sides touch each other. 3. Place the cable under a UV curing lamp for about 5 minutes. o The UV light hardens the ink. o Now the two pieces are joined and stable, ready for further work. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 3: Exposing the Copper Traces Now comes a very important step: exposing the copper wires (traces) of the flex cable so that we can solder them later. 1. Take a pen-type cutter with a sharp new blade. 2. Carefully rub the ends of both flex pieces. o The rubbing removes the thin insulation layer (polyimide film) and exposes the shiny copper traces underneath. 3. Be very careful: ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 4: Cleaning and Preparing for Soldering Before we can solder, the area must be perfectly clean. 1. Clean the exposed traces using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and a cleaning sponge. 2. This removes dust, oil, and any leftover UV ink. 3. Once clean, the traces are ready for the next stage: tinning. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 5: Tinning the Copper Traces Tinning means applying a thin layer of solder on the copper lines. This prepares them for jumper wires. 1. Apply Mechanic ISM5 solder paste to the exposed copper traces. o This paste helps solder to flow smoothly. 2. Set your soldering iron to about 300°C. o Do not go too high, or you may burn the flex. 3. Gently touch the soldering iron tip across the traces with the paste. o A thin layer of solder will coat each copper line. o Now all points are “tinned” and ready for jumper connections. 4. After tinning, clean the area again with IPA and a sponge. o This removes excess flux and gives a neat working surface. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 6: Preparing Jumper Wires For reconnecting the two ends of the flex: 1. We use ultra-thin jumper wire, usually 0.009mm (thinner than a human hair). o These wires are specially designed for micro-level PCB and flex repairs. 2. Take a good quality tweezer with a bent tip to hold the jumper wire. 3. Apply a very small amount of ISM5 solder paste again on the tinned copper traces. 🛠️ Step 7: Soldering the Jumper Wire – First Connection Now we begin attaching the jumper wires one by one. 1. Hold one end of the jumper wire with your tweezers. 2. Place it on the first copper trace of the flex cable. 3. Gently touch the point with the soldering iron (300°C) for just a second. o The solder melts and grabs the wire firmly. 4. Now stretch the wire across to the matching trace on the opposite piece of the flex. 5. Touch the soldering iron again. o The wire is now connected between both traces. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 8: Cutting the Jumper Wire After connecting the first wire: 1. Lift the remaining part of the wire with tweezers. 2. Use your pen-type cutter (with a sharp blade) to cut the extra wire. 3. Make sure the cut is neat, and the jumper wire is not loose. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 9: Repeating for All Copper Traces The same process is repeated for each and every copper trace: 1. Place the jumper wire on the exposed tinned point. 2. Touch gently with soldering iron to fix it. 3. Stretch it to the opposite side and solder it. 4. Cut the extra wire. ________________________________________ 🛠️ Step 10: Cleaning and Strengthening Once all jumper wires are attached: 1. Carefully inspect every connection with a magnifying glass or microscope. o Look for loose wires, cold solder joints, or any unconnected lines. 2. Clean the entire repaired area with IPA and a cleaning sponge. o This removes any flux residue. 3. Apply a thin layer of UV mask ink over the jumper wires. o This step is very important:  It protects the jumper wires from movement or pressure.  It insulates them so they don’t short with other lines. 4. Cure the UV ink with the UV lamp for 5–10 minutes.
