How an NFL Player Threw 32 Grenades to Stop 100 Germans — In Just One Day

On November tenth, nineteen forty three, First Lieutenant Maurice "Footsie" Britt, a former Detroit Lions end, single-handedly held a mountaintop in Italy against roughly one hundred German soldiers. Armed with his M1 carbine and thirty-two fragmentation grenades, Britt fought at close range on the slopes of Monte Rotondo in the Mignano Gap, killing five enemy soldiers, wiping out a machine gun crew, and refusing to leave his wounded men despite being shot through the side and peppered with shrapnel. For this action, he received the Medal of Honor, becoming the first American soldier of World War Two to earn all four of the U.S. Army's top valor decorations: the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star. Before the war, Britt caught a forty-five-yard touchdown pass for the Detroit Lions. After the war, he lost his right arm to a German tank shell at Anzio, governed the state of Arkansas as Lieutenant Governor, and dedicated a stadium with a speech calling on Americans to prevent future wars. This is the true story of the only NFL player to receive the Medal of Honor and survive, told from official military records, the Medal of Honor citation, and eyewitness accounts preserved in the University of Arkansas archives.
