Why Gen Z Culture Is Basically Medieval China | Boring History For Sleep

A thousand years ago there was a city of over a million people that never closed, where almost nobody cooked at home, where you could order hot food to your door at any hour, and where exhausted young people were quietly deciding to opt out of an impossible system. It was called Kaifeng. The year was 1100. A slow, calming history story to help you fall asleep. This is a long-form sleep story, designed to help you fall asleep, relax, or simply listen in the background. Soft narration, gentle pacing, no sudden volume changes, and no jarring interruptions. And despite the title, this is not a video about young people ruining things. Quite the opposite: it is about the fact that none of it is new, none of it is decline, and the last civilisation accused of all the same crimes produced some of the most beautiful art that has ever existed. You are not here to learn. You are here to rest. Let it wash over you. Tonight we wander through Song dynasty China and keep bumping into the present. The night markets that ran until two in the morning and reopened before dawn. The delivery runners carrying hot food through the lantern light, and the four-character phrase that meant order anytime. The restaurants with printed menus and waiters who sang your order across the kitchen. The three hundred tea houses of Hangzhou where writers sat and worked all afternoon over one cheap cup. The tea contests judged on foam, eight hundred years before latte art. The examination hell that swallowed entire lifetimes, the undergarments covered in a whole library written with a rat-hair brush, and the young men who looked at the odds and lay down. The poems written on inn walls that strangers answered for a hundred years, which is a comment section made of plaster. The pampered cats. The fake antiques. The moralists complaining that the youth were soft, distracted, spendthrift and reading everything and understanding nothing. And at the end, gently, the point: none of this was caused by technology. Put people in a city, give them a little money and some literacy and some hours that are not spoken for, and stop making them go to bed, and this is simply what happens. Every time. It happened in Kaifeng. It is happening wherever you are lying right now. Snoozebase tells boring history in the best way possible — slowly, softly, and with just enough gentle humour to make you smile before you drift off.
