Elizabeth Báthory is in the Guinness Book of Records as the most prolific female murderer in history — 650 young girls, tortured and killed, her name written into legend as the "Blood Countess" who bathed in virgins' blood to stay young. It is one of the most famous horror stories in Europe. There is only one problem with it. The most prolific murderer in recorded history was never once put on trial. This is the case file underneath the legend — read the way it should have been read four hundred years ago. We count the victims and watch the number grow from seven to six hundred and fifty as it travels away from anyone who could have counted. We follow the phantom register of the dead that every retelling calls the proof — and that no judge ever saw. We look at who profited when the richest widow in Hungary was taken from her own house in the dark and sealed away without a verdict. And we find out exactly when the blood bath was invented, by whom, and how many years after she was already dead. This is not a defense of a saint.
