Powder coating is a great tool to add to your arsenal especially if you're into restoring classic motorcycles and cars. Compared to paint, powder coat is considerably more durable and long-lasting. In this video I use this cheap ebay DIY powder coating kit to refinish an old rusty grab rail I purchased for my latest motorcycle project, a Fireblade. The grab rail was originally powder coated, but being the age it is, and probably following considerable use, the bar was in a real sorry state. The original finish was peeling away, and beneath it rust was starting to spread. Having checked that this relatively large item would fit in my relatively small domestic oven first. I decided that the right way to go in restoring this piece was to powder coat gloss black rather than my usual 2k painting. As the item will be a contact point on the bike, powder coat was definitely the correct choice of finish and should last for a long time. Powder coating with a domestic oven at home is quite simple to do and as you'll see in the video, if you can figure out how to hang your metal object in the oven, you can powder coat all kinds of items. Once the powder has been applied evenly with the powder coating gun, I've had the best results allowing it to bake on for around 30 minutes at 200 degrees celsius. Following this, allow it to cool and your item is ready to go.
