Radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the entire prostate. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. In Robotic Prostate Cancer Surgery, small incisions are made in your abdomen. Surgical instruments and a camera are inserted through these incisions. The surgical instruments are attached to the arms of a robot. These arms are controlled by the surgeon from a console positioned next to the operating table. The surgeon separates the prostate from the surrounding tissues. The seminal vesicles, two small, fluid-filled sacs next to the prostate that secrete the fluid that forms part of semen, are also removed. Sometimes, lymph nodes, commonly known as glands, are also removed. The surgeon takes care to minimize damage to the nerves and blood vessels surrounding the prostate. The prostate and seminal vesicles are removed through one of the abdominal incisions. The bladder and urethra are then reattached. Robot-assisted surgery provides a clear view of your body, even the smallest parts. A catheter is placed in your bladder to help the stitched wound heal. The catheter removes urine from your body.
