Third of all - the reason behind taking these videos: Though I'm a frequent flyer, I still suffer from severe flight anxiety. This already starts at the moment I am thinking about booking a flightticket for a holiday. The flight anxiety is not just something thats only 'exciting' and I know a plane is the safest transport vehicle in the world. Even though I know how to rationalize it, my anxiety takes over. Sometimes I was crying or I was being stiff with fear in my seat, not daring to move myself during the flight (in case the plane would fall out of the sky... I know, it sounds funny ;)). Especially during take-offs, turbulence and sometimes while landing (only when there's a heavy turbulence due to the clouds) my anxiety score is the highest. This time I was flying by myself, not having any friends or family who could support me. Not that they actually can, because my mind is denying everything someone says to support me. After reading a Dutch book (Over Vliegangst en hoe je ervan afkomt, written by Dr. Lucas van Gerwen: captain at KLM, psychologist and founder of Stichting Valk), it already helped me for the preparation of flying. I figured out a way to distract yourself while facing my fears. Please note: I'm not claustrophobic. I took a seat at the window, which I already booked while I bought my ticket. I always prefer the first 10 rows, because you won't hear the engine that much. So what I did: First, I introduced myself to the cabin crew to inform them of my anxiety. Second, I was able to meet the first pilot and captain on board. Thats convenient if you have issues letting go of control. Third, I started filming the take-off. Filming the take-off helps me to distract myself and enjoy the view. I'm hardly noticing the sounds in the airplane (like the engines) and the movements the plain takes. I kept focussing on creating the best and most impressing video that I could make for people who also suffer from flight anxiety. And for those, who just love to watch take-offs and landings. I never felt so safe before!
