May 19, 1845, Greenhyde, England. Touted as "absolutely safe," and equipped with the best equipment available to mankind at the time, two ships carrying 134 men set sail for the Northwest Passage. Equipped with steam engines, reinforced bows with iron, and carrying three years' worth of food and over 1,000 books—it was the most perfectly prepared Arctic expedition in history. However—the ships vanished. All 129 men perished in the ice. This happened just 11 months after the report stated, "Everything is going smoothly." The last remaining piece of paper read: "Both ships were abandoned on April 22, 1848." "John Franklin died on June 11, 1847." Even 181 years later, this expedition remains unfinished. This incident has been downplayed by some. A doctor who simply brought back the truth about cannibalism, and whose reputation continued to decline in Victorian England, was branded as "the man who believed the words of savages." For 150 years, the Inuit narratives, considered "the oral traditions of savages without writing," were not taken seriously by anyone. Then, in 2014, while searching for the recorded location, blocked by ice, and forced to turn back, the ship that the narratives had pointed to for 150 years was found. And then... 2021, 2024, and 2026. The bones began to speak. Through DNA testing, people whose names were lost in the ice are returning, one by one. Even after 181 years, the answer remains.
