Excuses, Excuses: Denial and Delay — Ezekiel 12:21-28
In this study of Ezekiel 12:21–28, Stephen Armstrong opens the third division of Ezekiel — a section where the rebellious exiles in Babylon offer eight excuses for ignoring God's word, and God answers each one. Here Armstrong covers the first two. The first excuse, "the days are long and every vision fails" (v.21-22), is a proverb of pure denial — a cynical claim that prophecy always fails, echoing the mockers Peter warns of in the last days. Despite having lived through Jeremiah's and Isaiah's fulfilled warnings, the exiles have hardened their hearts, drowning out true prophets with the noise of false ones. God's answer (v.23-25) is to "make the proverb cease" by fulfilling His word swiftly and silencing false prophecy. The second excuse — that the vision concerns "many years from now" (v.26-28) — is delay, conceding truth in principle while dismissing it as irrelevant to daily life. Armstrong applies this directly to a modern church culture chasing "relevant" and "practical" preaching at the expense of sound teaching, and closes urging listeners to treat Scripture as both true and urgent in light of the nearness of Christ's return.
