கம்புள் கோழி புதுமையான வாழ்வியல் - white breasted waterhen facts and Life - Anbulla Sahotharan The White-breasted Waterhen is one of the most commonly seen wetland birds across South and Southeast Asia. This species belongs to the rail family Rallidae, a group of birds that are adapted to living around marshes, ponds, rivers, and rice fields. This bird is widely distributed in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, and many other tropical regions of Asia. It is considered a resident bird in most of these areas, meaning it lives there throughout the year and does not perform long-distance seasonal migration. The White-breasted Waterhen can be easily recognized by its white face, throat, and chest, contrasting with its dark grey to black body. Another noticeable feature is the rusty reddish patch under the tail, which becomes visible when the bird lifts its tail while walking. It also has long yellow legs and long toes, which help it walk easily on soft mud and floating vegetation in wetlands. This species usually lives near freshwater habitats such as marshes, ponds, canals, swamps, and agricultural wetlands. It is often seen walking along the edges of water bodies, moving through dense vegetation, or crossing small roads near wetlands. Unlike many water birds that spend most of their time swimming, the White-breasted Waterhen is primarily a walking bird. Its long toes help distribute its weight so it can move across soft mud and aquatic plants. The diet of the White-breasted Waterhen is omnivorous. It feeds on a wide range of food items including insects, worms, snails, small crustaceans, frogs, seeds, and plant material. The bird usually searches for food by slowly walking along the ground or shallow water while picking prey with its beak. Breeding usually occurs during the monsoon and post-monsoon months, when wetlands are full of vegetation and food resources are abundant. The nest is typically built using grasses, reeds, and other plant materials, hidden inside dense vegetation near water. The female generally lays about 5 to 7 eggs. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs, and incubation usually lasts around 19 to 22 days. The chicks hatch covered with black down feathers. Soon after hatching, they are able to walk and follow their parents. However, they still depend on the adults for protection and guidance while learning to find food. The parents actively guard the chicks and may produce loud alarm calls if predators approach. The White-breasted Waterhen is also known for its loud and distinctive calls, especially during the breeding season. These vocalizations are used for communication between mates and for defending territory. In many rural areas of Asia, people often hear its calls during early morning or evening near wetlands. Despite living close to human settlements, this species has successfully adapted to human-modified environments, including agricultural fields, irrigation canals, village ponds, and urban wetlands.
