El día que Chile humilló a México ante los ojos del mundo | México vs Chile (0-7)
The Mexican national team, criticized by the football world for competing against inferior opponents and being limited to playing no more than four matches in a World Cup, has been the non-CONMEBOL team with the most appearances in the Copa América. The Aztec squad, present in ten editions of the continent's most important national team tournament, has reached the final twice but has never managed to lift the trophy. Back in 2016, under the management of Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio, the Mexican team crossed the border and arrived in the United States. That trip, close to home, was aimed at competing in the Copa América Centenario. It's worth noting that this competition, just one year after the 2015 edition in Chile, was organized in conjunction with CONCACAF to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the South American Football Confederation, which would later adopt the name CONMEBOL. The truth is that on June 5th, in Phoenix, the Mexican team defeated Uruguay; and four days later, in Pasadena, they did the same against Jamaica. Although they couldn't overcome Venezuela in Houston, and ended up drawing 1-1 with the runner-up of Group C, it was clear that the real competition was beginning with the fourth match. It's important to note that the Mexican team had gone 22 matches undefeated, although most of those matches had been friendlies, Gold Cup games, and World Cup qualifiers against clearly much weaker opponents. In that context, on June 18th in Santa Clara, California, El Tri was scheduled to face Chile in the quarterfinals, seeking their fifth match, at least at the continental level. Pizzi's team, which had just won the Copa América in their country under the guidance of Sampaoli, had finished second in Group D, which meant they would face Mexico in a knockout stage. The Chilean media understood that the players were still adapting to Juan Antonio's system and sowed some doubts about their collective performance. For example, La Roja lost to Argentina in their debut, beat Bolivia in the last minute with a dubious penalty, and although they defeated Panama 4-2, they arrived at the quarterfinal match depleted. So great was the supposed difference between the two teams that the Mexican media belittled their rivals, ridiculed Bravo, mocked King Arturo, and even threw him into a jar of chili peppers, implying that this Chilean team didn't sting them. La Roja, without Isla due to yellow card accumulation, took to the field with Bravo; Fuenzalida, Medel, Jara, and Beausejour; Díaz, Aránguiz, Vidal; Puch, Vargas, and Alexis. Mexico, for its part, fielded Ochoa; Araujo, Dueñas, Moreno, and another Araujo; Layún, Herrera, Guardado; Lozano, Corona, and Chicharito. Around the 9th minute, Edson Puch missed a one-on-one opportunity, and at 15 minutes, he was about to score the first for Chile after Ochoa parried a shot from Díaz. Mexico wasn't responding, and at 36 minutes, Brazilian referee Heber López disallowed a goal by Vargas for offside. With two minutes left in the first half, Vargas himself scored the second after a pass from Alexis and a glaring error by the Mexican defense. In the second half, a serious mistake by Herrera, a pass from Vidal to Alexis, and it was 3-0 for Chile. Immediately afterward, Vargas broke free down the left flank, and the striker, with a touch of finesse, passed to Mexico for their fourth. Six minutes later, Turboman pounced on a rebound from a dreadful Ochoa save, making it 5-0. The rout was complete. The Mexican press called their players miserable, even demanding Don Ramón's head, and the fans, who had traveled to Santa Clara, stopped the wave, the nachos, and the chicha, checked the time, and wept in each other's arms. Speaking of humiliating defeats and regional league players, we can't overlook Chile's sixth goal. No Mexican wanted to get their hands dirty, so Puch won the ball low, allowing Vargas to score the sixth. And as if that weren't enough, with three minutes left, Puch again chipped the ball over Ochoa, almost mockingly, making it 7-0. That Mexican wound in Santa Clara sparked a long debate about the vast difference between the national teams of the south and those of the north. Obviously, playing against Argentina or Brazil wasn't the same as playing against Haiti or El Salvador. Osorio himself later called it an accident, saying that something similar could happen to anyone. The fact is, Chile won that competition after defeating Argentina on penalties, thus securing the continental title once again.
