Under normal operation, Chaffers Level Crossing lowers automatically as a train approaches. Drivers are required to stop at the Stop Board and check that: • The barriers are lowered • The flashing white light indicator is illuminated • The crossing is clear and safe to proceed over Once clear of the crossing, the driver observes the Barriers Up, or “BU”, indication. This confirms that the level crossing barriers have raised correctly after the passage of the train. The video also provides a useful opportunity to understand the importance of local instructions, route knowledge and defensive driving at level crossings. If the crossing equipment does not operate correctly, drivers must report the failure to the signaller at Preston box at the earliest opportunity and follow the relevant instructions for the type of failure. Examples covered by the local instructions include: • Failure of the driver’s flashing white light indication • Failure of the level crossing barriers • Failure of both the barriers and road traffic signals • Failure of the Barriers Up “BU” indication Chaffers is a good example of why route knowledge is more than simply knowing the direction of travel. Drivers must understand stop boards, indications, local crossing instructions, degraded working arrangements and the actions required if equipment fails.
