Physical & Chemical Changes | Examples & Indicators
Teach Physical & Chemical Changes: Things are constantly changing all around us. The materials that make up all the “Stuff” around you can be changing in shape, size, or structure. They may be absorbing or releasing energy, and even creating NEW substances. What’s the difference between a PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL change? MS-PS1-2 Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. Examples of reactions could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with hydrogen chloride. Assessment is limited to analysis of the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor. TEKS SCI.6.5.C Matter and energy. The student knows the differences between elements and compounds. The student is expected to: identify the formation of a new substance by using the evidence of a possible chemical change such as production of a gas, change in temperature, production of a precipitate, or color change. SCI.7.6.A Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has physical and chemical properties and can undergo physical and chemical changes. The student is expected to: distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter. SCI.8.5.E Matter and energy. The student knows that matter is composed of atoms and has chemical and physical properties. The student is expected to: investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicates that new substances with different properties are formed and how that relates to the law of conservation of mass. SCI.9-10.I.7.B Science concepts. The student knows that changes in matter affect everyday life. The student is expected to: recognize that chemical changes can occur when substances react to form different substances and that these interactions are largely determined by the valence electrons; #physicalchange #chemicalchange #scienceforkids #science #ngss #teks
