Something I see a lot of my painting students struggle with is overworking. This is something all painters have tried - realizing their mistake and wishing they had stopped sooner. It’s important to see the big picture - especially for us painters. Step back and see the big picture - literally! When you stand close to your canvas you see all the lovely details, subtle shifts in color, texture and all these things become very clear to us. This is where we can get carried away and add too much detail and other things. So remember to step away from the canvas to really see. Also the bigger the artwork the more distance you’ll need. This can be a challenge when working on a large canvas in a small studio space, which I have done for years and years when I had a tiny painting place. Seeing a mirror image is also a great tool for assessing the balance in your work, as sometimes we can look and stare for so long at the painting that we really can’t see what’s wrong or not. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All music by Epidemic Sound.
