Tomb of Pharaoh Merneptah at Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Egypt

Welcome to Episode #10 of our series, “Picture This” from Egypt! This episode takes us inside the tomb of Pharoah Merneptah at the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt. Located on the west side of the Nile River, the Valley of the Kings has about 63 royal tombs that have been discovered to date. Pharoah Merneptah was the fourth ruler of the 19th dynasty in ancient Egypt. He was the 13th son of the famous Ramesses II. He became ruler only after all his brothers had died, which is why he became a ruler at the older age of 60 years. He was buried in what is today called Tomb KV 8 in the Valley of the Kings, the burial place of many the pharaohs of the 18th - 20th dynasties. Merneptah is most famous for his royal “Stele” that bear the names of “Israel” (and specific cities like Gezer, Ashkelon, and Yanoam). Found in 1896 by Flinders Petrie, the Merneptah Stele is one of the most important “primary sources” that link this Egyptian pharaoh with Israel and the Bible. Within Revised Egyptian Chronology, Merneptah may be identified as the pharaoh who conquered and burned Gezer (1 Kings 9) and whose daughter became one of the wives of King Solomon.
