Tiverton High School End of the 2012/13 Academic Year Review

TIVERTON HIGH SCHOOL ended the academic year today, and to pay tribute to the six months the Tivvy High News team have been reporting, they have put together a video showing the memorable moments of the past half year. Six long standing school stalwarts who have been given the name the 154 club due to the combined time they have been at the school also said goodbye to colleagues today as they head into retirement. Headteacher Andrew Lovett paid tribute to the 154 club in this week's Thursday Bulletin. "Jan Sampson is retiring. Unbelievable I know! After only 37 years. Jan came to Tiverton in 1976 and has been a one-school girl since that point. "If there is one person who stands for caring for young people in Tiverton it is Jan. "There are quite literally thousands of young people who needed a moment of support, care and attention and benefited from Jan's nurturing. On their behalf, thanks Jan" "Rob Stevens is retiring. For THS he is quite literally the 'IT' man. "Rob started as a Scientist before moving over to the new world of computers (shortly after they were first invented, eh Rob?). "Rob has trained many, many ICT teachers over the years, including our entire ICT department. "Obviously the speed of change in the world of ICT has kept us all on our toes but Rob has kept THS at the front of developments throughout the period. "Jenny Osment, my PA, is leaving. Jenny has housetrained four Head teachers, including me and has done so with a smile that is only occasionally through gritted teeth. "Just keeping teachers organised is pretty tricky, but keeping heads and deputies in line requires an exceptional set of skills and the patience of a saint. "In September if you see me wandering about looking confused and bewildered...it's because I'm not being organised and 'reminded' on a regular basis. "Thanks Jenny, for all you've done for me and my predecessors. Mark Backhouse, the History Man, is retiring. There are generations of young people who have been inspired by Mark's unique approach to teaching history. "I know Mark doesn't want to lay down his chalk and I'm guessing Tiverton hasn't seen the last of his inspirational lessons. "Sarah Grosse has supported students who need help with their reading since 1997. "Everybody knows THS works tirelessly to make sure that the youngsters who don't find education easy reach their milestones and Sarah's behind the scenes work has been a very large part of that. "Janet Franklin started teaching here in 1977. "After retiring as a teacher she took on the thankless task of organising cover for absent teachers and running our careers and work experience sections. "And although you wouldn't know it from her, the careers work has won a regional award."
