Aaron Tsosie here — the person behind the camera. Welcome to the 87th Annual Tohono O’odham Fair & Rodeo Parade, held Saturday morning on Main Street in Sells, Arizona. I attended the pow wow last year on Saturday only and didn’t realize there was a parade, so I was excited to finally experience and document it this time around. My mom and I parked near Bashas in Sells, and luckily there were plenty of bleachers set up along Main Street. We walked across the street and ended up near the beginning of the parade route — a great spot for filming, especially since the parade volunteers and participants were still fresh and full of energy. Parade lineup starts early at 6am, with the parade beginning at 9am, so arriving early is key if you want a good spot and an easier exit afterward. The parade wrapped up around 10:30am, and it took us about another 30 minutes to head over to the pow wow grounds. We were a little late for the 11am gourd dancing, but that’s part of navigating a busy weekend like this. There were plenty of food vendors selling breakfast burritos and coffee — we grabbed our morning coffee from the gas station across from Bashas for $2, with $1 refills. A quick tip for anyone visiting: on most Native reservations, cash is king and always a safe bet, though tap-to-pay definitely came in handy too. I managed to get through the entire weekend with a $20 bill and my phone. Huge shoutout to Lalo, the MC across the street. I introduced myself and shared my channel with him, and between floats he even checked in to see how he sounded — thumbs up all the way. I hope to see him again next time.
