The "Triad" Fallacy | Does Colossians 2:16 Use It? Let's See!

Colossians 2:16 | Sabbath | Festival, New Moon, Sabbaths | Yearly, Monthly, Weekly Triad This is Part 2 of my discussion with Christopher on Colossians 2:16. In Part 1, we examined the Greek word sabbaton and tested the claim that it must refer to the seventh-day Sabbath because it often carries that meaning elsewhere in the New Testament and the Septuagint. We demonstrated why that argument fails, since the meaning of a word is ultimately determined by its context, not merely by how it is used elsewhere. Now we turn to another common argument. Many critics claim that the phrase "festival, new moon, Sabbaths" (the yearly, monthly, weekly triad) must include the seventh-day Sabbath because similar triads in the Old Testament do. But is that sound reasoning? If context determines the meaning of sabbaton, shouldn't the same principle apply to the triad itself? Does a familiar Old Testament formula always retain the exact same referent under the New Covenant, or can context determine its meaning there as well? Ultimately, does Paul use this calendar "triad" formular and if so, HOW does he use it and does he reinterpret the referent as he does with so many other Old Testament things? In this video, we carefully examine the logic behind this argument, compare Scripture with Scripture, and ask whether appealing to Old Testament usage alone is sufficient to settle the meaning of Colossians 2:16. We also discussed another important issue: creation versus redemption. Christopher argued that redemption is a greater work than creation. However, we examined the biblical evidence and demonstrated that redemption itself depends upon creation. The Redeemer had to become the Creator's creation in order to redeem humanity (John 1:1–3, 14; Col. 1:16–20; Heb. 2:14–17). In the discussion, Christopher ultimately conceded this point. Watch the entire discussion and decide for yourself whether the argument stands up to careful biblical and logical examination. Part 1: The meaning of sabbaton in Colossians 2:16. Part 2: Does the "festival, new moon, Sabbaths" (yearly, monthly, weekly) triad necessarily include the seventh-day Sabbath? Plus a discussion on creation versus redemption.
