TSS interviewed him about his feelings immediately after the announcement and his thoughts leading up to the decision. It was the first time in five years for the Carp to declare free agency. Two days later, Nishikawa Ryoma was at the training facility in Shinkiba, Tokyo. He participated in a baseball seminar in Japan by Seattle Driveline, which many major leaguers also attend. He is analyzing batting from a scientific perspective, aiming to further improve his batting technique. How are you feeling now, two days after declaring free agency? [Nishikawa] "Honestly, I'm sad. I said that. Of course, I've been here for eight years and it's all thanks to the Carp that I've come this far. I don't think there's anyone who doesn't feel sad. To be honest, I thought I was about halfway through my career in professional baseball, and when I thought about the timing, I thought that if I was going to take on the challenge, now was the time, so I came to this decision." He worked harder than anyone else to earn his free agent rights in the baseball he loves. It was a decision that he agonized over for a year after declaring his intention to stay last year. [Nishikawa] Q: Do you have any regrets at all? "Not anymore. I've said it. I might regret it if I do poorly now. It's like I'm not good at all at the start of (next season). That can't be helped, I don't have the skills. When I joined, I was very small. The people around me were so big that I thought, 'This is bad, I can't do this.' I just wanted to stay in the first team somehow. And now, eight years later, I've acquired free agency rights. I never imagined it." His outstanding bat control earned him the nickname "genius," and Nishikawa became an indispensable member of the team. But what never disappeared was his pure desire as a baseball player to "get better." [Nishikawa] "The Carp are a good team after all. Seriously. I do get a little addicted to them. It's not right to think that this is good enough. If I think that way, I'll stop, I think to myself. So I decided to jump into something completely different. Being addicted doesn't work, on the contrary. You have to compete.
