Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano (1974–2012) was a notorious leader of the Los Zetas cartel, a criminal organization primarily involved in drug trafficking in Mexico. Lazcano, also known as "El Lazca," joined Los Zetas in the 1990s as a member of the Mexican army's special forces. Under Lazcano's leadership, Los Zetas became one of Mexico's most powerful and violent criminal organizations, involved in activities such as drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and human trafficking. Lazcano was also responsible for the brutality and violence that characterized the cartel, including the use of decapitation as a method of execution. Lazcano became the leader of Los Zetas in 2008, following the death of his predecessor. During his time as the cartel's leader, Lazcano was one of the most wanted criminals by Mexican and U.S. authorities. In 2012, Lazcano was killed by Mexican special forces during a shootout in a town in the state of Coahuila. His death was a major blow to Los Zetas and the drug war in Mexico, but the organization continued to operate after his death.
