The 3rd John Radford Public Lecture, Measuring Psychological Beliefs: From rebelliousness to radicalism & other explorations in tall buildings - A career in retrospect. with Professor Mark McDermott, 29 October 2024 Prof McDermott looks back over his career as an academic psychologist during the last 45 years, with 35 of those spent as a lecturer at the University of East London (UEL). It will be his final talk before retirement on the 1st November 2024, thirty-five years to the day after starting at UEL on 1st November 1989. He will continue his association with UEL Psychology as an honorary Emeritus Professor. In the talk he explores unexpected regularities and patterns in his professional life and offers insights into the development of his journey as a psychology teacher and researcher. From early career experiences in tall buildings to the development of conceptual and methodological approaches, the talk provides pointers for aspiring academic psychologists and is of general interest beyond. The delivery of this lecture series celebrates the life and work of Professor John Radford who started the first psychology department in the University in the early 1960s, and amongst many other achievements was instrumental in setting up psychology as an A level subject in the UK. He was in attendance at the event.
